Friends
There was a very good advert on TV a few years back in England. I've tried to put a link to it here.
Its called 'Harvey and Rabbit'. You'll get the drift. And it uses the song 'Friends' by Adam Buxton. And one line is:
"Who's gonna tell you when you're not a prat, if not your best friend". Which seems quite true and set me thinking about the other roles that friends serve. A friend can or must:
- Tell you when you are a prat
- Remind you of good times (or hard times) that you've shared
- Keep your feet on the ground
- Love you and remember you
- Get drunk together when necessary
- Ring you up for no reason at all
- Dig out embarrassing photos of you at exactly the best moment (remember this can be done to you but in return you can do it to your friend)
- Stay the same (for good or bad), so that your husband/wife can say "Trust him/her to do that!"
- Be interested in you but not for sex (so that you aren't second-guessing)
I'm sure we can generate an entire job description in the comments if we try hard, but I wanted to mention how really good friend-keepers seem to work.
I am describing among other people my late wife Cro. She loved having her friends and had ones she'd met at primary school; at university; online friends she'd never met but completely real and firm for all that; people she'd met on the bus in the last year.
She was really interested in them and they in her. She spotted something they'd like and told them. She rang them freely when in despair or when "in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes". She got annoyed with them when necessary but forgave generously if they would accept it.
I have a good number of friends and am very grateful for it. I include in this all my siblings because, you know, they can be friends too if you are lucky. I really like meeting up with all my friends but the good thing is that you can feel your friends' warmth and support even when they are not with you.
And you hope they feel that from you. That you randomly just like them (ok, love isn't too strong a word).
And you always will, even unto death.
